The team has arrived in Bonita Springs, FL, just 10 miles north of Naples and retired to the hotel for the evening. Tomorrow morning the house crew will instrument a home in Marco Island and one in Naples, while the tower crews will scout potential drop locations for the five weather stations as the National Hurricane Center’s guidance develops. Access has already been granted to the Naples Municipal Airport, a large facility that provides the desired exposure, and currently in Wilma’s projected path.
A new sonic anemometer has also been installed on T5. A sonic anemometer measures the wind speeds by measuring the time of flight of ultrasonic signals between pairs of transducers. These results will be compared to the standard wind monitor and gill anemometer records on the tower, essentially offering system redundancy. Also auxiliary fuel tanks have been installed on the towers for the diesel generators, increasing tower operation time by 12-18 hours.
